India bid farewell to one of its most brilliant minds on May 20, 2025—Prof. Jayant Vishnu Narlikar or Prof. Narlikar a man who not only shaped modern astrophysics but also redefined how science could be imagined, taught, and communicated. A scientist, teacher, author, institution builder, and artist of ideas, Narlikar was a rare embodiment of the STEAM ethos—Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.
🚀 The Cosmic Architect
Born in Kolhapur in 1938, Narlikar's scientific journey began at Banaras Hindu University and reached global heights at Cambridge, where he collaborated with Sir Fred Hoyle. Their partnership led to the pioneering Hoyle–Narlikar theory of gravitation and the development of Quasi-Steady State Cosmology—a bold alternative to the Big Bang theory.
At a time when India was still finding its place in global science, Narlikar challenged prevailing theories with confidence, precision, and intellectual honesty.
🏛️ Institution Builder and Mentor
Upon returning to India in 1972, Prof. Narlikar joined the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). Later, as Founder Director of IUCAA (Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics) in Pune, he built a collaborative research hub that gave wings to a generation of Indian astrophysicists.
His blog series, “The IUCAA Story,” published between December 2024 and March 2025, offers an intimate glimpse into how vision, grit, and humility shaped one of India’s premier research centers.
🖋️ The Artist in the Scientist
What set Prof. Narlikar apart from many in his field was his belief that science was not complete without storytelling. He authored numerous science fiction stories in English, Marathi, and Hindi—offering Indian readers thrilling journeys through time, space, and imagination.
In essays like “Que Sera Sera… Science Fiction at the Mermaid”, he reflects on global science fiction forums while encouraging a uniquely Indian sci-fi narrative. His work reminds us that science and art are not silos—they are co-creators.
🧠 The True STEAM Icon
Jayant Narlikar’s life exemplified the interconnectedness of:
Science – Through pathbreaking research in cosmology
Technology – Via space experiments to detect microorganisms at 41 km altitude
Engineering – In shaping academic infrastructure like IUCAA
Arts – Through his fiction and public science writing
Mathematics – His deep foundations in theoretical modeling
This is what STEAM education aspires to build—a generation that doesn’t just compete, but creates.
🎬 A Call to Creators and Students
The time has come for students of science, media, literature, and the arts to reclaim India’s scientific imagination. Imagine films and stories that draw from Prof. Narlikar’s fiction rather than foreign imports. Imagine animations, plays, and novels inspired by Indian astrophysical concepts, Indian heroes, and Indian wonder.
Let Prof. Narlikar’s works become the source material for a new creative wave—rooted in science, driven by imagination.
A National Treasure Remembered
In his final years, Prof. Narlikar continued to publish reflections on history, society, and science through his Substack blog. His writings show us a man who never stopped thinking, questioning, or dreaming.
And as PM Modi rightly said in his latest tweet, his contribution to inspiring young minds will be remembered forever.
🌠 Let Us Imagine Forward
Let us honour Prof. Jayant V. Narlikar not just with tributes, but with creation—by building on the bridges he made between science and storytelling, thought and wonder.
There are many Narlikar in india who are not as famous as him. Lets connect all these thinkers at https://www.instagram.com/mix_it_with_the_arts/ and bring their work out.
